Supartz injection is a five week course of hyaluronic acid supplements.
Supartz was first used in Japan in 1987 and it remains one of the most common viscosupplementation injections in use world wide.
Compared to some more modern similar products, Supartz needs to be given more often before it has benefit. For Supartz injections you need five in total - once a week for five weeks. Supartz is most commonly given into the knee but it has also been used for other joints.
Supartz acts partly by replacing the missing lubrication synovial fluid in an arthritic joint - but also partly by suppressing inflammation chemicals which cause damage to joint cartilage.
New research on what causes the cartilage to deteriorate has shown that injections of viscosupplementation fluid can help to slow the wear and tear in the joint - and by doing this can reduce pain and improve function.
